Capernaum (Kfar Nahum)

Kfar Nahum (village of Nahum), the Hebrew word for consolation or comfort. Lies on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee near the ancient main road in the land, the Way of the Sea (Via Marris). Located in the regions of two of the Israelite tribes in Old Testament time, Zebulun and Naphtali. At the time of Jesus, Capernaum was a central location between the Jewish and the non-Jewish area. It served as a custom (taxation) station and the place of residence for the Roman officers. When Jesus left Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum and it became the center of His ministry. He performed more miracles here than anywhere, in fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah saying: “in the former time he brought in to contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death upon them a light has shined”.

The two future blessings of Jacob to his sons, Zebulun and Naphtali were fulfilled in Jesus and in the years to come. Genesis 49:13 – ” Zebulun shall dwell by the heaven of the sea: He shall become a heaven for ships and his border shall adjoin Sidon”.

The most northern city that Jesus traveled to was Sidon where He healed the daughter of the Canaanite (Phoenician) woman (Matthew 15:21-28, Mark 7:24-29). Through the sea the disciples went away to the west to spread out the good news. Genesis 49:21 – “Naphtali is a deer let loose, he uses beautiful words.” Throughout the way of the sea (Via Maris) the fame of Jesus went to all Syria “great multitudes followed him from Galilee, and from the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan” (Matthew 4:24-25
