Between Capernaum and Tabgha, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, there is a mountain. It is most probably the mountain which Jesus went often to pray by Himself. “He went out to the mountain to pray and continued all night in prayer to God” (Luke 6:12). This is where He chose the 12 disciples: “And when it was day, he called His disciples to Himself and from them He chose twelve whom He also designated apostles” (Luke 6:13).
On the northwest slope of the mountain there is a relatively flat area which looks like a big natural amphitheater with great acoustics. This is believed to be the place where Jesus taught the Sermon of the Mount, the most important sermon ever taught. This a place where a big crowd of people could gather around Jesus to listen to Him. “And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyra and Sidon came to hear Him” (Luke 6:17).
On His way down from the mountain to Capernaum, Jesus healed a leper (Matthew 8:1-5). “When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him and behold a leper came and worshipped Him.” After the healing of the leper, it’s written “Jesus had entered Capernaum.” Capernaum is located down from the mountain… showing it’s the right mountain.
